sumac tea time... ode to biellarina

not all sumac is poisonous! this one makes a delicious summer beverage that tastes like lemonade:

The Staghorn Sumac seed head makes an especially delightful tea. Do not wash the red seed head, for the flavor is contained in water soluble crystals on the outside of the berries.

Cover the seed heads with boiling water; allow to set for an hour or so. Strain through a cloth. The resulting pinkish liquid should then be sweetened to taste and diluted if too strongly flavored.

Tangy and delicious - hot or cold. Only six seed heads will normally make a pitcherful of sumac-ade.

more eagle square portraits...

had a conversation with a fellow photographer tonight about pictures, and i was reminded of these eagle square pictures i shot a few weeks ago. it seems like i often hear aspiring photographers talk about how they have difficulty taking pictures of strangers, or getting close enough to photograph people. i think it begins with just simply asking a subject that you are drawn to if it's okay that you photograph them. i think most people will say yes, and after that, i think the ball is in your court... what does yoda say? there is no trying, only doing? or something like that... ;) oh, i feel like i should add that these two were a funny pair. when i asked them if they were friends, they answered no, we're just drinking buddies at the vfw. ha!
