sumac tea time... ode to biellarina

not all sumac is poisonous! this one makes a delicious summer beverage that tastes like lemonade:
The Staghorn Sumac seed head makes an especially delightful tea. Do not wash the red seed head, for the flavor is contained in water soluble crystals on the outside of the berries.
Cover the seed heads with boiling water; allow to set for an hour or so. Strain through a cloth. The resulting pinkish liquid should then be sweetened to taste and diluted if too strongly flavored.
Tangy and delicious - hot or cold. Only six seed heads will normally make a pitcherful of sumac-ade.

brunch by ben AND jena randolph... an ode to anjali pinto

jena's husband ben randolph is an amazing chef in the columbia, mo area. he made brunch for all of us and i've promised to trade him food pictures for his future website in exchange for eating his food! anjali pinto is (was?) a grad student at MU and a fabulous photographer of exquisite food... i've learned a thing or two from checking out her work.

my dream job...

it's actually not as a salmon berry picker. BUT, between assignments today while taking old dirt roads through the county i came upon a road lined with salmon berry plants. i stopped and picked a whole jar's worth and thought to myself, i have my dream job (internship). i get to go and do all sorts of fun and different things during the day... i get to drive through the county and go to the very tops of skyscrapers... i get to meet the most curious of people and talk to them about their lives. tomorrow is my second to last day at the bellingham herald, and i'm going to miss it so much. :(
