so... i photographed the whatcom county athletes of the year for the herald, and i thought it would be cool to paint them with light and give more of a surreal feeling to the images. it was a LOT of work, but in the end, i learned more than i think i would've had i just gone an easy boring portrait route. also, if i ever do this again, i need to invest in a locking cable release. rubber banding random things to keep my shutter depressed was no fun. big thanks to my co-worker danny gawlowski for all of his help and guidance!!

I feel like I've written a post before about your CRAZY affinity for painting with light. You'd better email this to Rita. I bet she'd get a kick out of it. Seriously, though, you are a ROCKSTAR for the effort you bring to all the work you do. I am always inspired. (and that is 'patently' true.)
Great job shooting these portraits, you hit a home run on this one. Very creative solution for the athletes-of-the-year package. I like the 2nd photo best-- cool circles of white light. Good job
awesomely awesome. looks like so much work went in to this but indeed it did pay off!
Kick-ass!!!! Girl... these bring things to a different level.
Also, the post above.... I´m not usually in to sports photography but those are just amazing!
Katie, I really wish you'd stop phoning it in...
Inspirational to say the least...I think you're going places!

Way to work on this thing, Katie!
These turned out great! I'm glad your subjects were willing to let you experiment on them. My only critique is that in the last couple shots where you painted on the actual people, where the light leaves streaks, the images get a bit busy with the scattered highlights. But I think you would have easily gotten a 9.5 or 10 from Rita on the pool-kid and wrestler-guy shots. (was that a good sandwich compliment?)
